It’s Engagement Season! Here’s How to Start Planning Your Perfect Wedding Photos

Love Is in the Air — Welcome to Engagement Season

Every year, as the leaves fall and the holidays approach, something magical happens — engagement season begins. From Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day, couples everywhere are saying “Yes!” and starting one of the most exciting chapters of their lives. It’s also time to start thinking about wedding photos.

As a wedding photographer, this is one of my favorite times of year. There’s so much joy, so much anticipation, and a sense of limitless possibility in the air. Every couple I meet has a unique story to tell, and helping them translate that story into timeless images is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

That’s why I created my Engagement Season Workshop — a hands-on session designed to help couples learn, feel confident, and start their wedding photography journey on the right foot.

Whether you’re newly engaged or just beginning to plan your big day, this workshop is your chance to discover what you love, what to expect, and how to turn your vision into unforgettable images.

What Is “Engagement Season,” and Why It Matters

The term engagement season refers to that stretch of the calendar — roughly late November through February — when nearly 40% of all proposals happen. Between cozy holidays, family gatherings, and winter getaways, it’s the perfect time to pop the question and start planning for the future.

But engagement season isn’t just about proposals — it’s the launchpad for all things wedding planning. Venues begin filling their calendars, photographers start booking popular dates, and couples begin shaping the style and tone of their celebrations.

What many couples don’t realize is that photography touches every part of the wedding day — the timeline, the atmosphere, the emotion, even how relaxed you feel in the moment. Choosing the right photographer and understanding how photography fits into the flow of your day can make all the difference.

That’s where a little preparation — and a lot of insight — goes a long way.

Introducing the Engagement Season Workshop

I designed the Engagement Season Workshop to be more than just an information session — it’s a creative experience that empowers couples to plan with confidence.

This isn’t about sales or packages. It’s about helping you understand what goes into capturing your love story and what choices will make your photos truly yours.

During the workshop, we’ll explore:

  • 🎞️ Finding Your Photography Style — Whether you love timeless classic portraits, cinematic storytelling, or candid documentary moments, we’ll identify what feels most natural for you.
  • 🗓️ Creating a Wedding-Day Timeline That Works — Learn how to build a schedule that ensures great lighting, stress-free transitions, and time for the photos that matter most.
  • 💡 How to Choose a Photographer Who Fits Your Vision — What questions to ask, what to look for in style and personality, and how to know when it’s the right fit.
  • 📸 The Importance of Engagement Sessions — Why they’re not just “extra photos,” but an essential way to get comfortable, build trust, and capture your story authentically.
  • ❤️ Designing a Meaningful Shot List — Beyond Pinterest boards — how to plan for the images that genuinely reflect you.

Each session includes insights from real weddings I’ve photographed across the Capital Region — from lakeside ceremonies at Fort William Henry to elegant ballroom celebrations at the Mohawk River Country Club.

Every couple leaves with resources, practical planning tools, and a clearer vision for their day.

Why Learn Before You Book?

So many couples start the wedding process with hundreds of questions:

How many hours of coverage do we need? What’s the difference between digital galleries and albums? When should we do portraits?

These are exactly the kinds of questions we answer together in the workshop.

Understanding the photography process from start to finish helps you:

  • Make informed choices that fit your priorities and budget.
  • Avoid surprises later (like missing key moments due to timeline crunches).
  • Create a partnership with your photographer that feels collaborative and creative.

When you know how photography fits into the big picture, everything else — planning, communication, even the day-of experience — runs smoother.

At Ken Clough Photography, I believe great wedding photography starts with intentional storytelling. The more you understand about how it all works, the more your images reflect your real connection, emotions, and personality.

Engagement Sessions: The Perfect Starting Point

If you’re newly engaged, there’s no better way to begin your photography journey than with an engagement session.

It’s not just about having beautiful photos for your Save-the-Date cards — it’s about getting to know your photographer, learning how you feel most natural in front of the camera, and creating a shared comfort level that will shine through on your wedding day.

During engagement sessions, I often see couples relax into genuine laughter, quiet moments, and unscripted emotion. Those moments of authenticity become the foundation for stunning wedding photos later on.

Many couples tell me that their engagement session was the moment they really saw themselves as a couple — and realized how beautiful their connection looks through the lens.

And yes, we’ll talk about how to make your engagement session as fun and meaningful as possible — from choosing locations (like the Saratoga Spa State Park, Lake George, or the Schenectady Rose Garden) to outfit tips and timing for the best light.

Why I Love Engagement Season

For me, engagement season is about more than bookings — it’s about beginnings. Every couple I meet during this time brings a fresh story, new energy, and a different vision.

As a photographer, I see my role as part artist and part storyteller. I love creating cinematic, emotion-driven images that feel authentic and timeless — the kind of photographs you’ll still cherish decades from now.

There’s nothing better than seeing a couple’s story unfold from engagement to wedding day. From that first save-the-date shoot to the moment you walk down the aisle, it’s a privilege to capture it all.

This workshop is one of the ways I can give back — by helping couples feel informed and empowered before they even step in front of the camera.
