Why Conversation Comes Before the Camera

A Question I’ve Been Asked More Often Lately

On the surface, it probably seems unusual. Most photographers focus on portfolios, packages, and pricing.

So why spend so much time creating resources instead of simply promoting photography services?

The answer begins long before I became a wedding photographer.

A Lifetime of Working Alongside Young Adults

For most of my professional life, I have had two parallel careers.

During the week, I worked in higher education, helping young adults prepare for their futures.

On weekends, I photographed weddings, documenting another important milestone in their lives.

At first glance, those careers seem very different.

Looking back, I realize they have always been connected by something much deeper.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of walking alongside young adults during some of the most important transitions of their lives.

First as students preparing for careers and families.

Later as couples preparing to begin a marriage.

I’ve never felt that my role was to tell couples what they should do.

It was helping them grow into confident decision-makers.

The greatest satisfaction didn’t come from telling young adults what to do.

It came from watching them grow into confident decision-makers.

What I Have Learned About Helping People

Whether I was meeting with a student or sitting down with an engaged couple, my approach has always been the same.

Over the years, I’ve learned that people rarely regret decisions they truly understand.

That means listening before speaking.

Asking questions before offering answers.

Helping people understand their options instead of telling them what they should do.

That philosophy shaped my work in higher education, and today it shapes every conversation I have with the couples who invite me into one of the most important days of their lives.

Why Conversation Comes Before the Camera

Many photographers begin by describing their services.

I begin with conversation.

I want to know:

– What matters most to you?
– What worries you?
– What excites you?
– What kind of experience do you want to have?
– What kind of memories do you hope these photographs will preserve?

The camera comes later.

Because meaningful photographs begin with understanding, not equipment.

Helping Couples Find Their Own Answers

I’ve never believed that my job is to convince couples to hire me.

I believe my responsibility is to help them make the best decision for themselves.

Sometimes that decision leads them to my studio.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Either way, if they leave feeling more informed and more confident, I’ve done something worthwhile.

That belief shaped my work in higher education.

It shapes my work as a photographer today.

Why I Write

Over the years I realized many of the conversations I was having were the same conversations every couple was having.

Questions about:
– choosing a photographer
– feeling comfortable in front of a camera
– understanding wedding portraits
– comparing photographers
– making confident decisions

Instead of answering those questions one conversation at a time, I began writing.

One guide became another.

One conversation became a podcast.

Articles became books.

Books became workbooks.

Not because I wanted to become an author.

Because I wanted every couple to have access to the same thoughtful guidance, even before we ever met.

If you’d like to explore these books, guides, podcasts, and articles, I’ve gathered them together on my My Approach page, where you can begin with whatever feels most helpful.

More Than Photography

Photography has always been part of a much larger purpose.

Beautiful photographs matter.

But they are also the result of trust, communication, preparation, and understanding.

When couples feel informed, they feel more confident.

When they feel more confident, they relax.

When they relax, authentic moments naturally follow.

The photographs become stronger because the experience becomes better.

The Thread That Connects Everything

Looking back, I don’t see two separate and parallel careers.

I see one philosophy expressed in different ways.

For decades, I had the privilege of helping young adults prepare for the next chapter of their lives.

Today, I have the privilege of helping young couples begin one of life’s most meaningful chapters together.

The books, guides, podcasts, articles, and conversations are simply extensions of that same commitment.

They all exist for one reason:

To help couples feel informed, confident, and supported as they make decisions that will shape memories they’ll carry for the rest of their lives.

Start a Conversation

If these ideas resonate with you, I’d love to continue the conversation. Whether you’re just beginning your search or you’re ready to talk about your wedding, I’m always happy to answer questions and help you think through what matters most.
